Begonia Plant Show and Sale

The Sherman Library and Garden is hosting a Begonia Plant Show and Sale. On Saturday, September 16th and Sunday, September 17th, the Southern California Begonia Society is having a show and sale from 10:30am to 4pm. There will be a large variety of begonias both on display and for sale. There are over 1800 begonia species and new ones are constantly being developed. The exhibit will have many types including canes, tuberous, rhizomatous and Rex. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be a talk and question and answer session at 11:30am. Sherman Gardens Annual Summer Garden Party

The Sherman Library and Gardens Summer Garden Party will be held on Saturday, August 26th. The Sherman Gardens Volunteer Association hosts the Summer Garden Party. The party will include a Garden Party Hat Contest, Bouquet Bar, Silent Auctions and Raffle. Live music will be provided by David Aguiar and The Garden Party Players in the Central Garden. 608 Dahlia executive chef Jessica Roy will be preparing dinner for the attendees.  The party starts at 4pm and continues until 7pm. VEA Newport Beach Summer Concert Series

VEA Newport Beach is hosting a Summer Concert series, July’s installment features the Jordan Sherman Band. On Sunday, July 16th, the band will be performing from 2pm to 4pm.  Enjoy the concert from the new Sunset Lawn with ocean views, live entertainment, food, and drink specials. Traditional Bonsai Display

Sherman Library and Gardens is hosting a traditional Japanese bonsai display on Saturday, June 3rd. Debra Mauzy-Melitz, from Orange Empire Bonsai Society, will conduct an interactive demonstration, including how to display a bonsai tree in the traditional Japanese three-point display or in the modified two-point display. She will discuss how seasonality affects display element choices such as Suiseki (viewing stones) or accent plants as companion element to bonsai. The audience will help Debra design a display. The demonstration will begin at 11:30am and continue until 12:30pm. This demonstration is free with garden admission. Bonsai Artist Demonstration at Sherman Gardens

Sherman Library and Gardens is hosting a Bonsai Artist Demonstration on Sunday, May 21st. The demonstration will take place between 11am and 2pm, in the Sherman Succulent Garden. Several artists will be working on different specimens and will answer questions. On May 21st, guest artist Adam Toth has spent three years as an apprentice to bonsai sensai, Taiga Uruahibata San near Mt. Fuji in Japan. He has received an official Shobin certificate from the Japanese Shobin Bonsai Association. Shobin bonsai, are extremely small trees, no taller than 10 inches or 25 centimeters.  This is a drop-in demonstration, no need for reservations. Inaugural Newport Beach International Boat Show

The Inaugural Newport Beach International Boat Show will be Thursday, April 27th through Sunday, April 30th. Visitors will be introduced to the best in boating, yachting, and marine technology. There will be a variety of boats ranging from powerboats to sailboats to luxury yachts. There will be live demonstrations and performances throughout the show. Over 75 exhibitors will be onsite both on land and on the water. The show opens at 10am each day. The show is being held at the Lido Marina Village. 20th Annual Clivia Show and Sale

Sherman Library and Gardens in hosting the 20th Annual Clivia Show and Sale on Saturday, March 18th and Sunday, March 19th. This is the largest Clivia show in North America, there will be many forms and varieties on display and for sale. The show will have plants of pastel shades and leaf variegations, as well as the familiar yellow and orange bloomers. This is a judged show, and there will be a people’s choice category. Other categories for judging are potted plants, photos, florets and cut blooms. Don’t forget there will be plenty available in the sale to take home, this is a shade loving plant. Clivia experts will be on hand to answer all your questions. The show and sale begin at 10:30am and continues until 4pm. Orange County sold for $30.6 Million

Michael Franco of MWA Compass Realty, just sold the priciest home of the 2023 in Newport Coast. Located at 1 Pelican Drive, this 13,400 square foot home is part of the Pelican Crest development in Pelican Hill.  On January 4th, this estate was sold for $30.6 million, Michael Franco represented buyer in this transaction.  This was a 32% decrease in price from the original listing price of $45 million in July of 2021. The property was once owned by Herbalife executive Dolan Andry, who sold it in 2017. Art in the Library: Sandra Pipken: Technology and Color

The current exhibit for the Newport Beach Art in the Library installation is Sandra Pipken: Technology and Color, Digital Photography. This exhibit will run from January 7th through March 3, 2023. For Pipken, the creative process goes beyond simply taking a picture. She uses digital technology to enhance and alter images to a create an emotionally and meaningful experience for the observer. “Her art is meant to evoke a new sensibility by presenting a moment from different angles and aspects, reconstructed into a new composition of forms.
