Summer Camp at Newport Sea Base

The Newport Sea Base is hosting a variety of summer camp classes.  There are quarter day, half day and full day sessions in sailing, rowing, kayaking, woodworking, oceanography, and engineering. Due is natural setting and proximity to the water Newport Sea Base has both on and off water classes. Summer camps run throughout the summer, ending on August 19. Carnivorous Plant Show and Sale

The Sherman library and Gardens is hosting a Carnivorous Plant Show and Sale. On Saturday, June 18th and Sunday June 19th, join the Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts for a judged show featuring these unique plants from around the world. Members and vendors will be selling plants and supplies. The show will include material for all levels of expertise. The show and sale begin at 10:30am and closes at 4pm. On Saturday there will be a talk on an Introduction to the Carnivorous plants, Sunday’s talk will be on carnivorous plant care and also on Sunday there will be guided tours of The Sherman Carnivorous Bog. 27th Annual Balboa Island Parade

The 27th Annual Balboa Island Parade will take place on Sunday, June 5th at 11am. The theme for the Balboa Island parade this year is “Island Rodeo – Boots, Chaps and Cowboy Hats.” Whether you are participating in the parade or are a spectator, come dressed in your best western inspired outfit. Immediately following the parade, the after party will feature country western band, “Whiskey Hayride.” The after party will take place in front of the fire station. When planning your parade visit, keep in mind that the bridge will be closing at 10:45am, so be sure to arrive early. This parade is sponsored by the Balboa Island Improvement Association. The Newport Dunes Easter Egg hunt is back and in-person this year. On Saturday, April 16th, from 10am to 11am, the easter egg hunt will be held on the beach at the Newport Dunes Resort and Marina. The 49th Annual Police Appreciation Breakfast

The 49th Annual Police Appreciation Breakfast will take place on Thursday, March 31st.  The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce honors the Newport Beach’s Police Department. The special guest emcee will be NBC’s Dateline’s Keith Morrison. Honors will be given to a special officer, reserve officer, civilian, supervisor and volunteer of the year. The event begins at 7:15am and continues until 9am.  The 49th Annual Police Appreciation Breakfast will be held at the Hyatt Regency John Wayne Airport Newport Beach. Sunday Musicale at Newport Beach Library

The Newport Beach Library is hosting Sunday Musicale throughout the year. On Sunday, February 20th, 2022, Amber Liao will be performing a piano concert. This will be a concert of miniatures; each piece is just a few minutes long. Together these pieces form one journey. Music from Schumann, Mompou, Janacek and the pianist own pieces will be featured. Parent and Me Painting Class

Parent and Me Painting Class will be at Sherman Gardens in January. Parent and Me Painting: Bamboo and Beetle will take place on Saturday, January 15th. Local artist, Erna Van Dyk will teach this step-by-step class.  It will use watercolors to paint simple shapes. The class begins at 9:30am and runs for one hour. Parent and Me Painting is held outdoors in the garden prior to the gardening opening for the day. No experience necessary for this class. Sherman Gardens Cookbook

The Sherman Gardens and Library is launching a release of a cookbook written by their volunteers. ‘First Monday Coffee’ is a collection of recipes from the Volunteer Association of the Sherman Library and Gardens. There are 123 recipes in the cookbook.  The Gift Shop is stocking the book currently, proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the children’s education programs at the garden. ‘First Monday Coffee’ is a brand new and is just one of the many offerings at the gift shop which has seasonal plants, handmade items, holiday gifts and much more. Friends of the Library Used Book Sale

The Newport Beach Library is hosting the Friends of the Library Used Book Sale. The sale will be held in the Friends Meeting Room at the Central Branch of the Newport Beach Library. Book sales are held quarterly. There will be lots of book bargains. There is a members only sale on November 19th, from 1 pm to 4pm. The public sale will take place on Saturday, November 20th from 9am to 2pm. On Saturday, there will be “$3 Bucks a Bag” all day sale and bags will be provided.
